The concept behind Artistic White is to create a space that captures the essence of Chinese painting, which emphasizes the use of white space. The designer cleverly uses mirrors to hide the narrow sense of space and extends the herringbone roof, creating a unique visual experience. As sunlight flows through the space, the interplay of light and shadow paints an oriental mood, evoking a sense of spirituality and tranquility.
What sets Artistic White apart is its skillful integration of spatial attributes and expressions. The large, white space interacts harmoniously with the art of film, creating a seamless blend of light and shadow. In Chinese culture, the word for "shadow" is the same as the word for "movie," highlighting the deep connection between cinema and the play of light and shadow. This design captures the essence of this connection, providing a captivating environment for film enthusiasts.
The realization of Artistic White involved the use of medium sand stainless steel, cement brick, ultra-white glass, graded matte paste, and combined laminates. The project covers an area of 35 square meters, making it a compact yet impactful space.
Transforming an old diesel engine factory into a hub for film culture was not without its challenges. The project had to respect and integrate seamlessly with the ancient buildings of Pingyao Ancient City, preserving their historical significance. By adopting a modern, minimalist approach and refining the architectural form, the designer successfully blended historical architecture with contemporary elements, reflecting the inclusive spirit of New Orientalism.
Artistic White is not just a physical space; it is an experience that invites visitors to immerse themselves in the essence of film culture. By leaving ample blank spaces, the focus is redirected to the core of cinema, allowing for a deeper appreciation of its artistry and impact.
The project, which began in August 2018 and was completed in October 2018, is a testament to the power of design to transform spaces and create new possibilities. Artistic White breathes new life into Pingyao Ancient City, offering a fresh perspective on its rich cultural heritage.
